Derry Township leaves David Leonard dead, one injured

PITTSBURGH – A head-on collision between a Nissan and a Jeep on Route 217 in Derry Township on Friday afternoon claimed the life of a passenger and injured the driver of the Nissan, according to the Westmoreland County Coroner’s Office. The crash occurred at about 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of Route 217 and Industrial Boulevard. The Nissan was heading south and the Jeep was heading north when they collided. A third vehicle was also involved, but the driver escaped injury. The passenger of the Nissan, 72-year-old David Leonard of Derry Township, was pronounced dead at a local hospital. The driver of the Nissan was airlifted to a Pittsburgh hospital, and her condition is unknown. The driver of the Jeep was unhurt.
